Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror lately and noticed that you have brown spots all over your body? If you have, then you should be aware that those are most likely to be age spots, also known as “liver spots”. Although they are generally harmless, they can still hurt your self-confidence as they can make you unattractive. But cheer up because there are several things that you can do to get rid of such blemishes on your skin.

What are age spots?

Age spots are very common among adults who are already in their late 40s or 50s. You can easily identify them as they appear as flat and the color may vary from brown to black. Some are tiny while the others are quite noticeable. Usually, you can see them on your arms, hands, shoulders, face, and other parts of the body that are always exposed to the sun.

How are they formed?

The main cause of age spots is too much sun exposure. The UV rays of the sun can damage the skin cells, particularly the melanocytes which is found in the epidermis. These cells cannot stand the extreme heat from the sun that is why they easily get damaged. The affected area will then change in color (brown or black), and if you don’t protect it, further damage may occur and the more that it gets darker.

How to remove age spots?

You can deal with age spots by either completely getting rid of them or simply fading them. The former is more tedious because it requires the outer layer of the skin to be removed. On the other hand, fading age spots is merely lightening the color of the affected area so as to match the surrounding skin cells.

If you opt to totally remove your age spots, then you need to undergo cryotherapy or laser treatment. Keep in mind though that such procedure may cost quite a bit. You can also make use of home remedies, but you have to be very careful because not all of the methods that can be done at home are really safe and effective.

Other treatments

hgdhgd74If you are not willing to go for medical treatments to remove the blemishes, you should, at least, take care of your skin. Yes, you can live with age spots, but this does not mean that you no longer have to pay attention to them. You should be aware that worst cases of such blemishes may also turn into cancer. So, it is crucial that you stay away from direct sunlight. Also, it is essential that you keep your skin clean at all times and you need to eat healthy foods especially those that can help nourish your dermis.
